What is hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a relaxing, safe technique that induces a state of heightened awareness dominated by the subconscious mind. The hypnotic state is a similar state to when you are daydreaming, meditating or engrossed in a film or activity. When sports people experience this state, they often refer to it as 'being in the flow'.

Can anything go wrong with hypnosis?

No. There is no therapy safer than hypnosis. It is completely safe, non-invasive and wonderfully relaxing and comfortable. You cannot be made to do anything you do not want to do. You are in total control the whole time. At Hypnotherapy in Cardiff, you will not divulge intimate secrets, do anything foolish, 'get stuck', lose control, unknowingly give away your bank account details or allow yourself to be touched! You are completely aware throughout the hypnotic process. If you have an itch, you can scratch it. If you need to shift position, you can. If you need to cough, you do. And if, for whatever reason, you have had enough of the session, you can open your eyes, get up and leave. A good way to de-mystify hypnosis is to replace the word 'hypnosis' with 'focused relaxation'. The only thing that can go 'wrong' with hypnosis is that, because you are in total control the whole time, a few people will not allow themselves to relax, enter the hypnotic state and allow it to work.

What is (clinical) hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy is a therapy that uses hypnosis, a safe and enjoyable process that can change lives in the most positive and exciting of ways. Our bodies already have the natural mechanisms to allow us to live normal, healthy, happy and fulfilling lives but, occasionally, these natural mechanisms need a little help operating properly. "Clinical" hypnotherapy refers to hypnotherapy that is used to help clients with issues that are medically recognised as being physical or psychological. At Hypnotherapy in Cardiff, Nicholas T Doherty uses clinical hypnotherapy.

How does Hypnosis work?

Hypnosis takes advantage of the mind's ability to readily focus and relax, during which time our subconscious minds are highly receptive to new or alternative positive suggestions, perspectives and ideas. All advertising works by suggestion. A hypnotherapist uses hypnosis to utilise the mind's ability to follow positive suggestions, thereby facilitating your mind's own ability to "fix itself", whether it be enhancing sporting ability or creativity, removing unwanted fears, habits or pain, or generally improving happiness and contentment with life.

What is a Hypnotherapy session like?

At hypnotherapy in Cardiff, the first session is between 1.5 and 2 hours. Nicholas T Doherty will spend time finding out exactly what you require and then tailoring the treatment plan to exactly fit your needs. Once you are ready to be relaxed, Nicholas will talk you into the relaxed (hypnotic) state and then provide you with your pre-agreed positive suggestions. Any sessions needed thereafter, are between 50 - 60 mins.

How many sessions will I need?

That depends on the individual's ability to relax and be hypnotised and it also depends on the treatment or issue. From my experience as a Hypnotherapist in Cardiff, between 20% - 30% of clients need only one session. The rest, on average, need between 2 - 6 sessions to get a result they are happy with.
